Both teams had a cold start after missing their first shot of the game. After a missed 3-point attempt by SUSS, #30 Amirul of ITE secured the rebound a went from coast to coast for the easy lay-up and scored the first basket of the night. After several attempts by SUSS, they finally scored a point after long range effort by #12 Long King. Both teams were exchanging baskets throughout the quarter and were tied 16 apiece with about a minute and a half left. SUSS’s captain #11 Wei Liang put them ahead after a fastbreak. With 10 seconds left of the clock, he got his own rebound after a missed floater and scored and easy put back to end the quarter. #11 Wei Liang scored half of his team’s points and 4 of them came in the last minute of the quarter. #30 Amirul who was subbed out early in the first quarter, came back in the second stronger as he scored 6 consecutive points for ITE to tie the game at 22 points each. He drew two fouls early on and scored all 4 free throws. #25 of SUSS broke the deadlock and put SUSS ahead after a reverse lay up assisted by his captain #11 Wei Liang. SUSS tightened up their defense and gave ITE a hard time to score a basket. ITE only managed another 4 points after #30 Amirul’s 6 points early on in the quarter. #11 Wei Liang pulled the lead to double digits after scoring a contested 3-point shot. (26-36)
SUSS continued their run at the start of the second half after a backdoor cut by #23 Wei Xiang. Back to back baskets by SUSS’s #5 gave them the biggest lead of the game. SUSS were up 15 points and ITE were struggling to cut the deficit. A much-needed timeout was called by ITE to regroup and change up some tactics. Right off the timeout, #30 Amirul scored back to back and-1 baskets to cut down the deficit. Unfortunately, it was not enough to stop SUSS who always had an answer. SUSS went into the final quarter of the game with a comfortable 12 point lead. (40-52)
The fourth quarter started very slowly for both sides as both teams had trouble putting the ball in the basket. After 3 minutes, ITE’s #5 Ong Wei Xian ended the dry spell after hitting a shot off the spin move. He went on to score a 3-point shot to cut the lead to single digits. This sparked a 7-0 run by ITE and forced SUSS to call a timeout. The timeout proved to be a successful one as SUSS went on to a 6 point lead.
SUSS managed to get away with a win after a nerve-wrecking final minute.
